Saving a 12 quart cooker? Can u repaint enameled cookware?

Long story short, my wife and a friend were canning peaches and burnt the last bit of food in the pan. It burnt to a point that to clean it out will severly damage the enamel coating on the pan (not teflon, just normal enamel painted pan)>

I -can- buy a new one, but that seems a waste of $50 - $100 to get a decent one. Does anyone know of a food-safe paint that can be used to refinish a pan? Alt, I could clean it out and strip all the paint from the bottom of the pan and season the metal surface...

Thoughts / advise?

Here's the style pan, but hers is an enamel painted version not stainless.

Oh if I only had $1.00 for every time I burnt something!

Golddust, thanks for the link. I'll give acouple of those a shot before going to drastic measures (a wire wheel was my first thought when I saw the mess).

At home, we put a little bit of water in the bottom of the pan, dump in some powdered dishwasher detergent (preferably a good one containing enzymes), let it sit overnight. Then scrape away the excess chunks. It may take a couple applications to remove really crudded up pans. You could also dump in the dishwasher soap, bring it to a gentle boil for ~5 minutes, then let it sit overnight.

Thx. Tried the salt method and the soap / boil method. Neither method worked. The burned material was very thin, almost like black paint, and the soap had no impact.

I did use a wire wheel, and that got enough of the burned material off that its probably fine to cook with again (Looks like an old soup pot).. Didnt come off perfect, but close enough. I was very impressed that there was still a recognizable layer of enamel underneath the black... I expected that to come off from using the wire brush, but it held up just fine!
